10-Day Kelmend Trek

7 hiking days (10 days flight to flight) Vukël, Nikc, Lepushë, Vermosh & Selcë, Shkodër Prefecture Moderate–Challenging

Overview

Kelmend sits in the far north of Albania, in the Albanian Alps, in the Shkodër prefecture on the border with Montenegro. Rugged peaks, deep valleys, glacier-clear rivers and dense forest dominate the landscape, and the region is criss-crossed by well-marked trails through terraced farmland, beech and pine forest, alpine pasture, ridgelines and stream valleys — still little-known to the wider hiking public, despite being every bit as striking as the more popular hiking areas nearby.

The fields here are still worked by hand, and in villages such as Vermosh, Selcë and Nikc, pigs, cows, horses, sheep and goats still roam freely and people grow much of their own food. For centuries the people of Kelmend were known for their fierce resistance to Ottoman rule; their isolation in the Albanian Alps let them defend their mountain villages and keep Ottoman authority largely out of the region, reinforced by their Catholic faith and tight-knit communities, and the region is still regarded as one of the more authentic keepers of Albanian tradition.

This nine-day itinerary (ten, flight to flight) links five villages on foot — Vukël, Lepushë, Vermosh and Selcë, with a loop from Vukël to Nikc — following little-used paths, farm tracks and mountain ridgelines, with two nights in every guesthouse except Tirana or Podgorica, so the trip never feels rushed. Rest and recovery days can be set flexibly by the group as the trip goes.

Highlights

  • Just two long transfers (around 4 hours each) in the entire ten days
  • Every hike starts and ends at that night's guesthouse — no shuttling to trailheads
  • Seven full hiking days, with two nights in each guesthouse except Tirana or Podgorica
  • Walking on genuinely little-used paths, away from the busier trekking routes elsewhere in the Balkans
  • Swimming stops in crystal-clear streams, canyon pools and waterfalls along the way
  • Rest days and pacing can be set flexibly by the group as the trip goes

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

Flight and transfer to Vukël

Fly into Tirana or Podgorica — flights from Amsterdam to Tirana, Eindhoven to Tirana, or Amsterdam to Podgorica all work. From Tirana it's roughly a 4½-hour transfer to Vukël; from Podgorica it's closer to 1½ hours, plus the border crossing. Either way, the route from Hani i Hotit to Tamara winds through the beautiful Cem valley, following the river past steep mountains, gorges, small villages and traditional houses, with rugged rock and green hillsides opening up as you reach Tamara, the historic heart of Kelmend. From there an unpaved road leads to Vukël, your first stop. Overnight in Vukël.

Day 2

Loop hike: Vukël – Nikc

An easy loop, mostly on unpaved road, past farms, fields and pastures to Nikc, a mountain hamlet at the foot of Jezercë — the highest peak in the Albanian Alps — for coffee and local hospitality. Return along an unpaved track shared with free-roaming pigs, cows and sheep, following the stream back to Vukël. In the afternoon there's usually time for a swim at a nearby (cold) waterfall, or a short walk to a viewpoint. Overnight in Vukël.

13.5 km ↗ 300 m ~4.5h walking
Day 3

Vukël to Lepushë

From the guesthouse the route climbs back to the higher part of Vukël, then follows narrow, stony paths and alpine meadows up to the ridge and down into Lepushë — a steady climb throughout, with an optional side trip to the summit of Maja e Mrizit (1,950m). Luggage is transferred locally. Overnight in Lepushë.

16.3 km ↗ 1100 m ↘ 580 m ~7.5h walking
Day 4

Loop hike: Lepushë – Maja e Vajushës – Volusnica – Lepushë

A choice of fine routes today. The main option climbs from Lepushë to the ridge that forms the Albania–Montenegro border, crosses briefly into Montenegro for a loop across alpine meadows, ridgelines and three summits — Maja e Vajushës and the Volusnica and Talijanka tops — then descends from Popadija back to Lepushë. Overnight in Lepushë.

18 km ↗ 1200 m ↘ 1200 m ~8h walking
Day 5

Lepushë to Vermosh

A calmer but no less beautiful walk through one of northern Albania's finest valleys. From the alpine meadows around Lepushë, quiet village roads and mountain paths lead through rolling green hills to Vermosh, Albania's northernmost village, known for its hospitality and largely untouched nature. Luggage is transferred locally. Overnight in Vermosh.

13 km ↗ 820 m ↘ 560 m ~6h walking
Day 6

Loop hike: Vermosh – Maja Marlulës

A punchy walk with a steep climb at the start up to the ridge, where Montenegro comes into view, followed by long stretches through wild blueberry fields and a gradual descent through forest back to Vermosh. There's usually a chance in the afternoon for a cold, refreshing swim in the Bashkim canyon. Overnight in Vermosh.

14.4 km ↗ 1175 m ↘ 1175 m ~7h walking
Day 7

Vermosh to Selcë

A striking walk through the heart of Kelmend. The path winds through green valleys, along riverbeds and over rugged mountain paths, with the peaks of the Albanian Alps in view throughout. From the guesthouse the route climbs to wide pastures grazed by shepherds' flocks, past traditional stone houses scattered across the landscape, before the last stretch follows the Cem river as it squeezes through narrow gorges and rock formations. The guesthouse in Selcë looks out over the steep, layered mountains of the Cem valley. Luggage is transferred locally. Overnight in Selcë.

21.4 km ↗ 909 m ↘ 1425 m ~8h walking
Day 8

Loop hike: the waterfall of Selcë

A loop over steep limestone slopes to the waterfall of Selcë. On the way down the trail passes paradise-like, crystal-clear pools in the stream, with time to cool off and swim before heading back. This day is also offered on its own as the Selcë Waterfall two-day trip. Overnight in Selcë.

10.5 km ↗ 970 m ↘ 970 m ~5.5h walking
Day 9

Transfer to Tirana or Podgorica

Transfer back to Tirana or Podgorica. Overnight before the flight home.

Day 10

Return flight home

Flight home.
